The Great Story

Of Our Place

On Lough Derg

Derg Isle is an Irish owned and family run business which began as an agricultural site with lakeside access in Scarriff , Co. Clare, purchased by Anne and Padraig Giblin in 1988 as an addition to their ‘Fisherman’s paradise’, and ‘Sports world’ netting business. Fisherman’s paradise was a seasonal boat hire and self-catering business, and they identified an opportunity for off season periods and not just for fishing. Coupled with Sports world netting, https://sportsworldnetting.com/ which provides high netting and screening to sports pitches, industry and construction including high security prisons offered connection to the market for sports teams and schools. Over the years, Padraig worked to develop the thirteen-acre lakefront site into a little valley of oasis with peaceful surrounds, cocooned, sheltered into Derg Isle activity centre which was launched in 2015 offering land and water based activities with direct access to the lake through a series of calm and winding channels which lead onto the mighty expanse of Lough Derg.

Scarriff is a small town situated in the heart of East Clare, close to the shores of Lough Derg. County Clare is Ireland’s westernmost county, bounded by the mighty Atlantic on the west and the tranquil waters of Lough Derg on the east. It is home to Holy Island which is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland with its many attractions include a well-preserved Round Tower, the ruins of six churches, a Holy Well, a unique graveyard with slabs dating from the eight century and a cell like structure, which is one of the most extraordinary buildings in Ireland. While rural in its setting, Scariff is a short distance from the towns of
Ennis, capital of County Clare (22 miles), Limerick (22 miles) and Galway (40 miles) and just 25 miles from the international airport at Shannon. The major cities of Cork and the capital Dublin are also easily accessible.
